Not because the author judges. But because he observes. And because those observations feel strikingly timeless.<\/p><p data-start=\"594\" data-end=\"896\">Watzlawick shows <strong>how skillful we sometimes are at making life difficult for ourselves.<\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"594\" data-end=\"896\">How we turn small <strong>misunderstandings<\/strong> into <strong>major<\/strong> dramas.<br \/>How we <strong>hold on where letting go would bring relief.<\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"594\" data-end=\"896\">And how we <strong>deny ourselves lightness<\/strong> \u2014 without any ill intent.<\/p><p data-start=\"898\" data-end=\"956\">This happens especially often in relationships.<\/p><p data-start=\"958\" data-end=\"1128\"><strong>We<\/strong> <strong>interpret<\/strong>, instead of asking.<br data-start=\"994\" data-end=\"997\" \/><strong>We compare<\/strong>, instead of truly seeing.<br data-start=\"1038\" data-end=\"1041\" \/><strong>We believe we know<\/strong>, what the other person means \u2014 <strong>and are surprisingly often mistaken.<\/strong>.<\/p><p data-start=\"1130\" data-end=\"1260\">The tragic part is this: <br \/><strong>We do it out of love.<\/strong><br data-start=\"1172\" data-end=\"1175\" \/><strong>Out of the desire<\/strong>,  to be understood.<br data-start=\"1212\" data-end=\"1215\" \/><strong>Out of the fear<\/strong>, of being too much or not enough.<\/p><p data-start=\"1262\" data-end=\"1357\">And yet, this very behavior often leads <strong>to the distance<\/strong>, we were trying to avoid.<\/p><p data-start=\"1359\" data-end=\"1497\">One of the most well-known stories from Watzlawick\u2019s book \u2014 and for many, their introduction to his way of thinking \u2014 is the story of the hammer.<\/p><p data-start=\"1499\" data-end=\"1857\">A man wants to hang a picture and needs a hammer. He decides to borrow one from his neighbor. On the way there, his thoughts begin to spiral: What if the neighbor doesn\u2019t want to lend me the hammer? Maybe he doesn\u2019t like me. Maybe he was already rather curt the other day. He probably thinks badly of me anyway.<\/p><p data-start=\"1859\" data-end=\"1892\">The thoughts escalate.<\/p><p data-start=\"1894\" data-end=\"2058\">When the man finally rings the doorbell and the neighbor opens the door, he blurts out: \u201cYou can keep your hammer!\u201d and storms off angrily.<\/p><p data-start=\"2060\" data-end=\"2134\">The hammer was never borrowed.<br data-start=\"2093\" data-end=\"2096\" \/>The story existed only in his mind.<\/p><p data-start=\"2136\" data-end=\"2456\">This short scene has become so famous because it reveals something we all recognize: how quickly we create inner dialogues without ever checking them. <strong>How naturally we turn assumptions into facts. And how much closeness is lost before a real conversation even begins.<\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"2458\" data-end=\"2548\">In relationships, this happens every day.<br data-start=\"2501\" data-end=\"2504\" \/>Not out of malice.<br data-start=\"2522\" data-end=\"2525\" \/>But out of habit.<\/p><p data-start=\"2550\" data-end=\"2714\">Mindfulness, in this context, does not mean doing everything right. Nor does it mean resolving every feeling or uncertainty immediately.<\/p><p data-start=\"2716\" data-end=\"2951\">Mindfulness means noticing when we are standing in our own way. When we are telling stories that are not true.
